The 2022 Dodge Charger is the only V-8-powered sedan that starts at a price under $40,000. Although the Chrysler 300 also has a V-8 engine with rear-wheel drive, it is more luxurious and expensive. The interior quality of the charger isn't great, and it's ride can be overly firm, especially on optional 20 inch wheels. Like the Dodge Challenger coupe, it has a standard V6 engine and available all wheel drive.
The most exciting Charger has a Hemi V-8 under the hood that ranges from 370 hp to 485 hp. The Scat Pack model is only available with the latter option and offers a unique widebody appearance. This sedan will not be for everyone, but it will definitely offer anyone who wants a nostalgic character an excellent choice.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Charger, with its V-8 roots in NASCAR, offers big power and rowdy sounds. Every charger doesn't have a mighty Hemi V-8 under the hood—which is unfortunate—but they all come standard with an excellent eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The contrast of the V -6 option is that it's subdued but does offer availability to all -wheel drive. Unfortunately, Dodge also doesn't build Chargers with manual gearboxes , though it would be much cooler if they did .
The standard V-6 is no slouch, yet it lacks the giddy-up of front-drivers such as the Nissan Maxima. The more powerful versions excel at the strip, where the 485-hp Charger R/T Scat Pack posted an impressive 3.8-second sprint to 60 mph. The 370-hp Charger has enough ponies to outrun most family sedans. The bright (Green Go) Charger we paraded around town had a quiet and composed ride. Its large 20-inch wheels were relaxed on most surfaces, but obstacles such as railroad crossings and potholes disrupted its composure.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Charger's interior places greater emphasis on function than luxury, using rubberized materials in lieu of higher-end fabrics. Even though it boasts excellent legroom int he back seats, overall passenger space falls below average. The cabin has a stripped-down design reminiscent of classic muscle cars, but plenty of options are available.
Even though the trunk volume is average when compared to other cars, the Charger was able to fit one more carry-on box than its rivals. With the rear seat stowed, it held a total of 18 boxes; three more than its competitors Maxima and fastback-hatchback Kia Stinger. The center console has multiple nooks for small items as well as a slot next to the shifter that fits smartphones perfectly.
